Starting position

The LSG Sky Chefs Group is part of the Lufthansa conglomerate and is the biggest provider worldwide for airline catering solutions. Every year their teams conjure up around 500 million tray meals for over 300 airlines. In 2008 Lufthansa ran an international design competition for intercontinental ecological airline tableware for the future. We were awarded the contract for our conceptual and design work.

The solution

Our new concept focused on materials, safety, space-saving, surface feel and recognition value of the Lufthansa brand. The ergonomic and functional design not only facilitates working processes that can sometimes be hectic but also packs aesthetic appeal. 

The benefit

With our legendary experience, we were able to give support on site to LSG Sky Chefs Group in product strategy and portfolio design. In 2009 our new airline tableware debuted on a long haul flight from Frankfurt to Los Angeles and since then has been "on air" for the Lufthansa brand all round the globe. In its first year of deployment, the tableware won the Red Dot Design Award, "Best of the best".

The product design

The tableware for Lufthansa economy class long haul flights is called "Leaves". Today's airline passengers expect more than good quality – they also want top-notch service. Aesthetic appeal shares equal weighting with ergonomic features. Our Lufthansa airline tableware creation is a contemporary classic – for indulgence at a sky-high level.
